Decodable Texts Newcomer Phonics Photos

Do you work with older ESL newcomer students in upper elementary? Do you need decodable passages that follow the science of reading by slowly building on phonics concepts but also have photographs to help with vocabulary development?

There are 7 separate passages included. Each passage includes 3-6 new letter sounds. The materials come in both print and digital formats.

Decodable Text Scope & Sequence

Background Knowledge Text

For each decodable text there is also a background knowledge text on the same topic. It is written using simple language that is accessible for newcomer students as a read-aloud.

Sentence Strips

The sentence strips use the text from the decodable passage and include a picture for each sentence. Cut them apart so students can practice matching the sentence with the correct picture. Leave them together for students to practice sequencing the events of the passage.

Word Matching

Students match words from the passage with the correct picture.

Cloze Passage

Students fill in the missing words from the decodable text. The same words they practiced matching with pictures are used in the close passage.
