ESL Newcomer Phonics K-2 | Beginning Reading Practice

Do your k-2 newcomer ELLs need an overview of basic phonics with pictures to support vocabulary development? Do your students need to practice only a few letters at a time? This set is just what they need for extra practice.

There are 12 lessons included. Each lesson introduces two new letters (except for the first lesson, which has 4 letters).

Scope & Sequence

The lessons follow the sequence of: m a t, p n s, i g, c k d, o r h, b l e, f j w, q u z, v y x

Phonemic Awareness

Each letter comes with a practice page that has six pictures of words where the beginning sound is the same as the focus letter. (For vowels, there are three beginning sound words and 3 middle sound words. The letter x has all ending sound words).

The letter introduction page comes in both color and black and white.

Reading Single Words Practice

There are practice pages to trace and write words and match words and pictures.

Spelling Practice

There are two spelling practice sheets included. One where students fill in the missing beginning or middle sound and one where students spell the CVC word using the provided letters.

Handwriting

The letter introduction page and first reading page both include space for tracing and independent writing.

Sight Words

Students read and trace sight words. There are heart over letter sounds that have not yet been introduced in the sequence or if the letter does not make its main sound.

Decodable Passages

There are two decodable passages included for each lesson. The passages only use the letters that have been introduced so far, along with a few sight words (which are the sight words that students practice on the sight word page). All of the decodable passages have 2-4 sentences of connected text.
