Newcomer Phonics Lessons K-2 | Practice Activities and Decodables

Do your k-2 newcomer ELLs need an overview of basic phonics that includes pictures and helps to build vocabulary? Then this set is just what you need. Each lesson introduces 2-3 letter sounds and gives practice with phonemic awareness, reading words, handwriting, reading sentences, spelling words, speaking, vocabulary, and reading decodable texts.

There are 9 lessons included. Comes in color and black and white.

Phonemic Awareness

Each letter comes with a letter card with a photograph (in the color version) or lip formation picture and 4 words that start with that letter sound. For short vowels there are two words that begin with the vowel and two with the vowel sound in the middle of the word.

Reading Practice

Read words and match the word with a picture. Read sentences and match with a picture (the sentences are the same ones used in the decodable books). Read a one page decodable story.

Speaking Practice

For each decodable text, there are two sentence frames and vocabulary words for students to practice creating sentences. This will also give them practice learning vocabulary words that help add to the story but are not always decodable in that lesson.

Spelling Practice

Use the student work mat to practice spelling words. The work mat includes pictures and the letters needed to spell those words. Place the work mat inside a dry erase sleeve for students to practice writing or use letter tiles for students to build the words.

Handwriting

Each handwriting sheet includes the letter from the lesson with space to trace and write. There are also lips forming the letter sound and pictures that start with that letter sound for students to color.
